Kenya · Embakasi, Nairobi · Launched March 14, 2026
In Nairobi's Mukuru kwa Njenga settlement, period poverty keeps girls out of class. We launched at Embakasi Girls High School on March 14, 2026, and are working with Ms. Jeruto Mukiri to change that, one school at a time.
School and community figures are from our Embakasi Girls initiative announcement, February 2026.
The Challenge
Just seven kilometers from Nairobi's business district, Mukuru kwa Njenga is home to more than 100,000 people living in 3m×3m corrugated iron shelters, with limited sanitation and clean water.
About three-quarters of Embakasi Girls High School students come from these households. Without affordable sanitary products, many girls stay home during their periods, fall behind and risk dropping out. Uniforms, toiletries and undergarments become barriers, too.
Every girl deserves the chance to learn, grow and pursue her dreams, wherever she was born.
Our Response

Working with our Kenya Country Representative, Ms. Jeruto Mukiri, the dignity initiative at Embakasi Girls High School provides:
So girls can attend school every day of the month with confidence.
Removing a barrier to the classroom and creating equity among students.
Toiletries, soap, toothbrushes and school stationery for health and readiness.
Essentials for comfort, health and dignity.
Beyond Supplies
Kenya is part of the One Youth One Mentor campaign, which connects students to professionals who can guide their education and careers. For girls in Embakasi, a mentor can show what is possible after high school: the courses, scholarships and careers that lead out of poverty.
Launched in Nigeria. Now reaching Kenya. South Africa is next.
