Dignity Delivered: If I Were XYZ Launches in Kenya at Embakasi Girls High School

A day of supplies, solidarity and a clear message in Nairobi's Mukuru kwa Njenga settlement: stop menstruation stigma

NAIROBI, KENYA — On March 14, 2026, the students of Embakasi Girls High School gathered under an outreach tent for the launch of If I Were XYZ, Inc.'s Kenya initiative, led by Country Representative Ms. Jeruto Mukiri. The day brought essential supplies to the girls of Mukuru kwa Njenga and took the organization's work from announcement to action.

Why Embakasi

Embakasi Girls High School serves 705 students. About three-quarters of them, some 529 girls, come from households in Mukuru kwa Njenga, a settlement of more than 100,000 people just seven kilometers from Nairobi's business district. For many of these girls, menstruation means missed school, because affordable sanitary products are out of reach. Uniforms, toiletries and basic essentials are barriers too.

The Day on the Ground

Country representatives and volunteers came together ahead of the event, then welcomed the students as they gathered in large numbers under the outreach tent.

Breaking the Silence

One image from the day says it best: a student standing beside a sign that reads Stop Menstruation Stigma. Period shame keeps girls quiet and keeps them out of class. The launch was built to challenge both.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue her dreams—regardless of where she was born or the circumstances of her household.

What Comes Next

The launch opens the door for the One Youth One Mentor campaign in Kenya, which connects young people with professionals who can guide their education and careers. It also lays the groundwork for continued support: sanitary towels, school uniforms, personal care items and undergarments for girls who need them most.
