ENUGU, NIGERIA — Day 2 of the 2026 ICT Summer Boot Camp at CIDJAP brought all twenty-one participants back to the centre on August 12th, split across three tracks: fifteen (15) in Basic Computer Application, four (4) in Web Development, and two (2) in Graphic Design. By day's end, students had new skills, new assignments, and — for four of them — brand-new laptops in hand.
Basics: Building the Foundation
The fifteen students in Basic Computer Application, led by facilitator Chris Igwilo, covered essential ground: keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft applications, what to look out for when purchasing a new device, the different types of users on a computer system, and how to change a desktop background. Their homework pushes the learning further — students were assigned to research how to create guest and standard user accounts, work they'll bring back to class.
Web Development: Coding — and New Tools to Do It
Guided by facilitator Olivia Omeje, the four Web Development students moved into the building blocks of web design: the image tag, its attributes, file paths, and list tags. Class closed with a real design challenge — students were given a link and tasked with recreating exactly what they saw, an assignment they'll continue as classwork the following day.
The standout moment of Day 2 belonged to this track: each of the four Web Development students received a brand-new laptop, courtesy of If I Were XYZ, Inc., to support their learning across the full five weeks of training. For students who may not have had reliable access to a personal device, this is the difference between following along and truly building.
Graphic Design: Elements and Principles
Facilitator Peculiar Eze introduced the two Graphic Design students to the meaning of graphics and the foundational elements and principles of design. Their assignment: recreate a picture shown on screen — a first hands-on test of the concepts they just learned.
How the Day Went
Across all three tracks, facilitators reported satisfactory levels of student interest and participation. Sessions ran from just after 10:00 AM until 3:30 PM, a full day of focused, hands-on learning.
Why the Laptops Matter
Day 2's laptop distribution is a concrete example of what donor support makes possible in real time. A five-week boot camp in Basics, Web Development, and Graphic Design means little without the tools to practice between sessions — and now, four students have exactly that. It's proof that contributions to this program don't sit in the background; they show up in a student's hands the very next day.
Ways to Support the Boot Camp
- Cash donations — fund additional laptops, facilitator stipends, feeding, and transportation
- In-kind donations — laptops, computer accessories, software licenses, or internet data bundles
- Volunteer facilitators — professionals in IT, design, or web development willing to guest-teach or mentor
Every gift moves a student from watching to doing. The four new laptops handed out on Day 2 show exactly what that looks like.
